FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs
FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs
What are the benefits of counselling? Are there risks?
Counselling can help you gain clarity, strengthen relationships (with yourself or others), build new skills, and process tough emotions. But it’s not always easy. Sometimes things may feel heavier before they feel lighter, because you’re digging into areas that have been avoided or buried. That’s normal—and often part of the process. My role is to support you through both the breakthroughs and the tough moments.
How long does counselling take? How often do I need to come?
The short answer: it depends. Some people come for just a handful of sessions to get support around a specific issue; others see therapy as ongoing maintenance or personal growth.
In terms of frequency, I usually recommend starting weekly or biweekly so we can build momentum and get comfortable working together. Often new things emerge alongside what first brought you in, and having that consistency helps us hold space for it all.
In relational work (whether with individuals or couples), I often work with clients longer term. This allows us to build a deep relationship, explore bigger themes and patterns, and make sense of the systems that shape your life and relationships.
Should my partner(s) and I do individual or couples counselling?
Great question. If the main issues feel rooted in your relationship dynamics, couples counselling is usually the best place to start. If one of you wants space to work on personal patterns, past experiences, or identity, individual counselling might be more helpful. Sometimes people do both—individual and couples work can complement each other. If you’re unsure, book a consult and we can talk it through.
What happens if we start working together and I’m not feeling it?
That’s totally okay. A big part of therapy is the fit between you and your therapist. If something feels off, let’s talk about it—I welcome that kind of feedback. And if it turns out I’m not the right person for you, I’ll do my best to help connect you with someone who might be a better fit.
How do I pick the right counsellor for me?
Think about what matters most to you. Some people look for a certain style (direct vs. gentle), specific training (like couples therapy or trauma work), or just a vibe that feels comfortable. Trust your gut in consults—do you feel understood? Safe? Like you can be yourself? That’s more important than finding the “perfect” therapist on paper.
What’s the first step?
Book a free consultation! It’s low-pressure, no commitment. We’ll meet, chat about what’s bringing you in, and see if it feels like a good fit for both of us.
Do you take insurance or benefits?
My services may or may not be covered depending on your plan. Many extended health plans cover counselling with a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). If you’re unsure, it’s best to check with your provider. I do not do any direct billing.
What’s your cancellation policy?
Life happens! If you need to cancel or reschedule, I ask for 48 hours’ notice. Late cancellations or no-shows will be charged the full session fee. This helps me hold space for all clients who are waiting for sessions.
Do you offer online and in-person sessions?
Well, yes! You can choose what feels best for you. I offer secure online video sessions and in-person sessions at Opal Wellness (536 Head St.) in Esquimalt. Some clients stick to one format, while others switch between the two depending on their schedule.
What if I’ve never been to counselling before?
That’s completely okay—many of my clients are new to therapy when they first come in. We’ll go at your pace, and I’ll explain the process as we go. There’s no “right way” to do therapy—just showing up is enough.
